TMJ and Bruxism
Tempromandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders, also known as TMD, are a group of disorders involving the jaw joints.  These disorders range from painless slight popping and clicking sounds in the jaw, to debilitating pain which can prevent normal function.  It is important to first determine the cause of any abnormal signs and symptoms associated with the jaw joint in order to provide the appropriate treatment.

Often, bruxism (grinding and clenching) can cause sharp pain in the jaw joint.  Bruxism is associated with stress, and one of the ways one can manage this is through stress management modalities (such as relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, stress management massage, exercise, and in some cases, medications).  We also commonly fit the bruxer with a custom-made plastic mouthguard, which helps soften the bite and prevent damage to the teeth and jaw joint.
